Last Saturday I had a pleasure to photograph Ryan and Jessica’s wedding at the beautiful Indianwood Golf & Country Club in Lake Orion, Michigan.
After the ceremony we drove to Mr. B’s in Rochester Hills where Jessica and Ryan met.
I wanted to thank my friend and a fellow Michigan wedding photographer Duane Orris for 2nd shooting. I really enjoy seeing the day from his perspective.
I love this image. I saw that portrait of Jim Morrison on the wall. I asked Ryan to stand in front of it and look as his new wife (WIFE, how does it sound Ryan? , while I posed Jessica so she was lit by a window light. The goal was to get a reflection of the groom in the glass covering the wall portrait.
As Ryan was standing in the shade I asked my assistant Megan to hold a flash and point it at him. It was just enough light to illuminate him and get a hint of reflection. Just what I wanted

I don’t think Profoto gear needs introduction. If you’re serious about photography there is a big chance that at one point in time you considered their lighting equipment.
I’ve been happy so far with my Quantums for location shoots, but there are times when more power is needed.
I’ve spend a lot of time researching what battery operated power pack would suit my needs. I was almost ready to go with Elinchrom Ranger line which is priced very competitively compared to Profoto or Broncolor and has good specs. Budget is always a concern, right? Broncolor, Hensel, and Bowens were also strong contenders. Luckily before I pulled the trigger on the Elinchrom I checked with couple commercial photographers that I knew had previous experience with Elinchrom. To paraphrase their words: get anything BUT Elinchrom. I’m not going to write an essay what’s wrong with Elinchrom, but if you’re interested do your own research. Check professional message boards asking about broken handles and light modifier mount on the Elinchrom. Last thing I need to worry about is the build quality of my gear while I’m shooting. Elinchrom Octa Light Bank are great modifiers though and I actually ordered one along with the adapter to go with the Profoto heads.

What sold me on the Profoto is their service and availability at any good rental house. Profoto equipment, even though comes from The Old Continent is serviced in the US and usually is returned back to its owner within a few days. I’ve heard that getting stuff repaired from Broncolor can take months due to shipping back to Europe! That is huge for me.
I just got this last weekend and didn’t have much time to test it yet. I did some limited testing indoors however, but this is not why I got battery operated power pack. Here are my first impressions:
I got Pro-7b and two Pro-B heads along with some Profoto light modifiers.
Rock solid stuff, the build quality is superb. Profoto light modifier mount is awesome! It’s quick to attach and is very strong, so putting even large (heavy) softbox is not going to be a problem. Heads are fairly light, and were specifically designed for the 7b and B2 packs. They won’t work with D4 or Acute packs.
Recycle time was really important for me and 7b at 2.8s @ full power is quick. At lower power setting recycle is pretty much instant so no problems there. If you shoot at full power most of the time however and need super fast recycle time B2 is the ticked with 1.8s @ full power. That is crazy fast for battery power pack. Color temperature is consistent at any setting, but that should be expected from a unit of this class.
So far I’m loving it and will possible get another one later. I’ll probably post an update after some more testing.
Took these two with my Quantums so they don’t feel abandoned

We guys are lucky for not having to go through the enormous pain.

Emma was born April 15th, at 9:34am and weighted 7lb 15oz, and was around 21in. Here are a couple images I took after the delivery.

Brent and Natalie’s wedding was my first this season. I was so anxious and excited after a short winter break.

I spoke to Natalie and Brent a week or two before their event and Natalie said she doesn’t care if it’s cold or hot as long as it doesn’t rain. Well, not only it was pretty cold, it was raining as well

It was a slight bummer at first, but we used the dramatic sky to our advantage in a few shots, one being probably my favorite of the day. Brent and Natalie had their ceremony and reception at The Inn at St. John’s and I really enjoyed the lighting at the reception.

Due to my wife’s pregnancy, Duane Orris, my friend and a great photographer was helping me during the day. It was really cool working with him, and I’m grateful for having such good friends. Thanks dude!

I loved the idea with pink shoes. Isn’t that cool!

When I walked into the hotel, I noticed these blinds and thought it could be a cool background for a quick shot.

We were coming back to the room after taking couple shots with the bridal party, and I saw this painting. Being a sucker for bright colors I had to incorporate it in a few images.

Another one from the sequence.

Natalie’s dad was sitting in a bar and watching us when we were taking these shots. Natalie got a little anxious but she handled it well

I absolutely love this image. Except adding a little contrast, vignette, and toning, it’s pretty much straight from the camera. Off camera flash hitting Natalie from her left adding cool texture to the dress. I adore the dramatic sky.

I was doing a wider shot of the whole bridal party and apparently Natalie slightly lifted her dress exposing the pink shoes. Duane did a great job capturing the moment.

Usually grooms get a little less exposure then the bride for some reason so I wanted to feature Brent in a couple images as well.

There were several boxes of cigars for the guests to smoke outside. We sneaked with Duane to get a couple shots. He was holding a video light for me from the side so we could get more dramatic lighting.

After playing with some off camera flash with Prem, we went for a walk to downtown Royal Oak with my wife.

Here are few cool shots I took of her today.

I still had my flash on a light stand from the earlier photo shoot with Prem, and grabbed a quick shot while Marzena was waiting for me

I love the flare caused by the Sun

While we were walking past the restaurant nearby our house, I saw this tiny piece of yellow wall (maybe about 6-8 inches wide) and I just had to photograph Marzena in front of it. i’m a sucker for bright colors

We got together with Prem Mukherjee of Arising Images today to play with some external lights. Prem is an amazing photographer and it was really cool to just get out and shoot with him. It was rather spontaneous meeting and on a short notice we didn’t have any models to photograph - so we used each other as subjects.

I’m not the most photogenic person in the world so Prem had to work extra hard to get some usable shots of me

After playing for a while with video lights in my garage we grabbed our cameras, couple light stands, 4 external strobes, and looked for an open area nearby.

Prem had this crazy idea to jump as high as possible, throw out his arms in the air and make funny faces to the camera. I lied down with a wide angle lens on my camera and snapped away. We looked at the image and I was like “hey, that’s pretty cool! Take a shot of me doing the same!”. I wonder what people that were driving by though of us jumping in the air like monkeys, but who cares For this particular images wanted to go simple and used only one off camera flash. Sun behind was used as other light source.

Prem, thanks for coming and hopefully we can do it again soon

Here are some of the shots we took.

Cool, isn’t it? Looks like I’m actually flying

Love the shot Prem did here. It’s like from the Matrix scene - levitating in the air like that You can see a hint of a flash light on the right side, which could be easily cropped out. I actually left it on purpose there so you can see where exactly the light was coming from.

I love this hot. Prem is such a funky person - look at his face This is the first shot we did.

In this image Prem should be lighted by the flash which for some reason didn’t go off. The sun is right behind him which caused really cool rays of light. Unintentional, but I really like it <span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"">
